New Features for a New Year – SAP BusinessObjects 4.2 SP05

Do you want an agile, collaborative, self-service environment for your business and a consistent, accurate and secure platform for IT? Of course you do! With the recent release of BusinessObjects 4.2 SP5, there have been significant strides made in innovation and simplification. This post discusses just some of these enhancements from an administration perspective. We will analyze the user perspective in a more detailed post.

Recent changes to European Union regulations mean that any company doing business in the EU will need to review their Business Intelligence applications. So, what has changed? If your business processes (and this includes U.S. companies, not just EU ones) any personal information on a European resident, you need to be compliant with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Compliance must be in place by May 25, 2018, or your company could risk fines. This change to the EU regulation has been implemented in SP5. If you have questions or concerns about your need to upgrade to BI 4.2 SP5 for this reason, please don’t hesitate to contact us to discuss.

This may seem nothing more than an annoying dialog box, and the first thing you do is check the “Do not show this message again” – but from a compliance standpoint it can protect your business from one part of the regulation. The real work is in protecting and validating your data; SAP Information Steward can help with this challenge.

Simplify and Enhance

SP5 makes your administrator’s life a little easier. This update includes a number of changes that will help simplify the everyday tasks and make the repetitive and mundane a little easier to process. SAML integration allowing 3rd party authentication to provide the functionality for single sign on has been added. There have also been improvements to scheduling options. Administrators can now restrict where a user or group can schedule reports to and assign server groups exclusivity.

Manage and Repeat

The BI Management Console allows you to manage your administrative activities from a single portal. With the addition of the automation framework, complex and repetitive tasks can be developed, combined, executed, monitored and reused to reduce the workload on your administrator.

You can combine tasks into logical groups to create a Workflow.

Workflows can be combined and executed as a scenario.

Improved Experience

The SAP Fiori User Experience is now firmly in place for the BI Launchpad and first steps for Central Management Console (CMC). The Initial version had limited functionality and there is still a way to go before we can leave the classic CMC completely. It is now easier for the administrator to view jobs by allowing selection of favorites, sorting by name, filtering by name, adding custom images, and enhancements for scheduling recurring jobs by selecting specific dates.

Mass Duplication

Improvements to promotion management provides fast, mass copy of your CMS using a wizard. Creating a duplication of your live environment can be done either in full or by selection of specific content.

Tighter Integration

New events allow for a more seamless integration with SAP Business Warehouse. You can now trigger a BW load event from you BI Platform. For BW users registered in the BI Launchpad, there is now functionality to manage the user from within the Launchpad.

Speedier Commentary

Big performance improvements when using an ODBC connection and improved user experience when using the commentary feature. Now users can highlight information in a report to the cell level and open a discussion with others right in the report, eliminating the need for exports or screenshots filling up your email!

Reap the Benefits

Why wait? Whether you need to comply with new EU regulations, or want to take advantage of the time and cost savings to your administrative team, an upgrade to BI 4.2 SP5 likely makes sense in your short-term BI plan. Talk to an upgrade specialist, who can take you through the step by step process for a successful and worry-free upgrade and show you all the benefits for your particular scenario.
